| 内容記述 | 論争家としてのミルトンの著作は (1) 第1期 (1641-42)、(2) 第2期 (1643-45)、および (3) 第3期 (1649-60) に分けて考察するのが便利であろう。第1期は Of Reformation in England から An Apology for Smectimnuus にいたる一連の「監督制批判」文書である。第2期は The Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce から Colasterion にいたる一連の「離婚論」文書と言論の自由を主張した Areopagitica である。第3期は The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates から The Ready and Easy Way to Establish a Free Commonwealth にいたる「共和制弁護論」である。拙論では、このうち第1期を特徴づけるミルトンの論争術の特質を彼の宗教的信念との関連において考察する。「監督制批判」文書はおおむね古典修辞学でいう「荘重な文体」(grand style) の見本とも言うべきものではあるが、論理的構造は、透明なものから不透明なものまで、さまざまである。その錯綜した文章構造は、ミルトン以後、イギリス散文の主流をなした「平明な文体」(plain style) とは際立った対照をなし、今日の読者には、少なからず抵抗を感じさせるものであろう。立論の根底には、プロテスタント特有の歴史認識と聖書観が認められる。ミルトンは、この時期、王権に寄生して世俗的権力をほしいままにする監督制に対して仮借なき攻撃の矛先を向けたが、王権自体についてはこれを容認していたと思われる。しかし、0f Prelatical Episcopacy に見られる通り、彼が監督制に対抗する教会統治方式として長老制を支持していたことも明らかである。第1期, ミルトンの思考の中で共存していたこの二つの構想が、第2期から第3期にかけて彼の思想が急速に急進化していく過程で廃棄を余儀なくされたのは、皮肉な成り行きであった。The polemical writings of John Milton may be considered in terms of the three periods in which they were composed : (1) 1641-42, (2) 1643-45, and (3) 1649-60. The first period is represented by a series of antiepiscopal tracts from Of Reformation in England to An Apology for Smectimnuus ; the second by a series of tracts on divorce from The Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce to Colasterion-and two other tracts (Of Education and Areopagitica) ; the third by political pamphlets defending regicide and republicanism against attacks from both within and outside of England. The present paper focuses on the first of these periods and considers certain rhetorical features of Milton's anti-episcopal tracts in relation to two forms of religious and political organization-episcopalianism and monarchy-both of which he was espousing vigorously in those tracts. The paper suggests that Milton, though a classicist in his stylistic technique, was a thorough Protestant, basing his argument on the principle of "the Scriptures alone". The paper also suggests that Milton the politico-religious writer had to undergo a significant change of mind as he moved from the second to the final phase of his polemical career. (That change, however, is only suggested at the end of the paper by a mention of the fact that, with the advance of the Revolution, he was forced to abandon his initial leanings on the Scriptures and adopt non- Biblical ideas -more radical, and more revolutionary, than is Scripturally warranted - along the lines of republicanism and religious toleration, except, however, for the Catholics). | |||||
